How to Excel

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. "

- Aristotle

True, simple but not easy, right?

What habit do you want to start that can make you excellent at what you do?

The classics:

  • Wake up earlier to exercise or journal
  • Stop drinking alcohol during the week
  • Plan for the week on a Monday morning and stick to the plan

And some more:

  • If your employment allows it, work following your energy levels - do the hard things when your energy is at its top, and do menial tasks when you are more tired.
  • If you can, base your work on outcomes and quality, not the quantity of hours worked.
  • Create the conditions and environment for several distraction-free "deep work" sessions each week for important and focused work that needs your full attention.
  • Finally, like author Liz Gilbert would say... eat, pray, love. Find a regular time (and if needed schedule it) for life pleasures and expand it beyond work. Leisure and rest will provide a well of inspiration and wellbeing that will come back to you tenfold when you return to your work.
