A simple question

Here's a simple question my partner asked me many years ago when I was confused about our situation and didn't know what to do:

"What do you want?"

Initially, it didn't quite register how important this question was, but then it changed (for the better) the following ten years of our lives.

It's not as trivial as it looks: we often do things because we "fall" into them (a job, our field of studies, a partner, the place where we live), but how many times do we actually ask ourselves what we truly want, and act upon that?
