How to find the courage to show up online to catalyse change
A few weeks back I had a wonderful conversation with Beatrice Ronchetti, a fellow Italian architect, who specialises in personal branding - listen or watch The Good Communicator Podcast episode with Beatrice on Spotify or YouTube.
Before you roll your eyes at yet another trendy and a bit obscure term, read on.
You are online, whether you like it or not.
If you are your own boss or you work for a company that wants to change the world, you can use this fact of life to influence your online audience to change behaviours.
I know, not everyone is brave enough to share their face online, but since you already are there, you can at least curate your message and presence so that it does make a difference in your quest towards a more sustainable world.
An example: I used to be an architect, and then I worked at BRE for over a decade as a sustainability consultant, a business developer manager and more. I occasionally work as a BREEAM AP, but mostly, I'm now a coach and a sustainability trainer.
If I didn't keep updating my online presence, people would probably still think I could design their kitchen extensions - which I can't do as I haven't practised for over 20 years.
The same goes for you:
- What do you want the world to learn about you when they look you up on LinkedIn or your website?
- What's unique about you (and before you say: "nothing", think again. We all have a USP. Whether it's a passion for recycling, being neurodivergent, having climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, or being good at transforming a complex message into a simple one)? Doing a personal strengths test can definitely help to find out - get in touch if you want to know more specifically about this as I can give you some pointers.
- What's your message to them? How clear is that?
So here are your tasks for this week:
- Take a look at your social media profiles and website, and take note of what you need to change so that people see more of the authentic you.
- Then think about how you can show up more as that ideal "you" online. Can you blog? Post more on LinkedIn? Shoot shorts? How can you better use your voice for sustainable change?
